Set off to discover Nuremberg, the great city of Franconian Bavaria and a former Free Imperial City, which experienced remarkable growth during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. As you stroll through the old town, admire its medieval streets, traditional houses, impressive Gothic churches and lively squares, all bearing witness to the city’s commercial and cultural prosperity. Nuremberg was one of Europe’s leading centres of trade and the arts, and the city where the renowned painter Albrecht Dürer lived and worked.
Continue with a visit to the Imperial Castle, including an audio guide, whose origins date back to the 11th century. It was one of the principal residences of the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire. Overlooking the city, it reflects Nuremberg’s political and strategic importance during the Middle Ages. Its imposing ramparts and towers offer magnificent views over the old town. Inside, discover the castle courtyard, the nearly 50-metre-deep well, the Imperial Apartments and the Romanesque chapel. The museum retraces the history of this fortress and of the Imperial City itself. Damaged during the Second World War, the castle underwent extensive restoration and today remains one of the most emblematic landmarks of Germany’s medieval heritage.
